The Horror

Yeah, I'm talking about the current state of the Music Industry.

It is bad huh?! Seriously.. Anyone ever heard the word "Payola"? If not, do a quick google for "Payola Scandal" to find out what it is.

It is happening right now! Come on! Nobody really liked J-lo, they were just forced to hear it and nothing else! When you only hear ONE thing, you have nothing to COMPARE it to!

Read More to see more ranting...

Does anyone here in the U.S.A. really like what the vast majority of radio content consists of???

REALLY???

These are the bands that i like (or no longer like rather), but they all contributed to the problem.

Weezer - Wow, did they create a TREND or WHAT?!? (I no longer like this band)

Tool - JEEEEEZUSS! These guys created the worst change in music since the BEATLES! (I no longer like this band)

Green Day - Sheesh... These guys got all these children to put these stupid trucker hats on their heads. (wait.... I NEVER liked this band!)

Incubus - Man, what happened to these guys? At one time they were good. Then they released the Album "Make Yourself". It was a decent album... Oh, wait! I know what happened to them! They realized they were ripping off another band (Mr. Bungle) and then started trying figure out something original. Well, they sure fucked up! (I no longer like this band.)

Thats enough for now. Who knows? Maybe i will write some more garbage later.

*Cliffhanger!*

In & Out

Jack Mystery.

I havent mentioned anything about old jack in quite a while. So, i will now. We had a great practice sunday night. We didnt really even "practice", we wrote a new song. Just pulled it out of the hat. This is the second song we have written since getting back together. I am really liking the direction we are headed. So, here is the first recording of the second song jack has written since the "break up".

"New Song July 17" Untitled

Of course this and a few other things can be found in the mLibrary.

Oh and sorry about the compression... Got a little heavy with it.

Great Albums Continued...

Here are a few more in no particuler order.

1. Bubba Ho-tep - Score for the film of the same name.
GREAT MOVIE! It is one of the most unique films i have ever seen. 20,000 Toes up!

2. Donnie Darko - The score to the movie.
Not the 80's music in the movie, the score. Though i do like some of the 80's stuff.

3. Miss Machine - Dillinger Escape Plan.
My all time favorite "metal" album.

I guess i will post these in 3's...

Great Albums

I am going to try and compile a list of some of favorite albums. Not "The Definitive" List, but a list nonetheless...

(These are in the order in which i thought of them)

1. Soundgarden - Superunknown
An over-all great album. Good memories associated with this one.

2. Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
An avant-garde masterpiece. Great stuff.

3. Pearl Jam - Vs.
A great "grunge" album from my generation's musical growth spurt. Lots of memories here.

Ok, that is all for now. I will have to think some more on this... Consider this as post one of several.

Hours and Hours

Now, why the italics on the I?

This was the line up of the evening.

1. Some horribly generic punk band. (we were supposed to open by the way...)
2. Us (Jack Mystery)
3. Another absolutely atrocious punk band.
4. A good punk band (if you even remotely like punk. the singer is actually pretty good).

First off, we were told that we would be opening with a total of three bands INCLUDING us. Fine whatever, i dont mind playing second.

We got setup on-stage and all that mess. and let me tell ya this. When we first got to the club and went in, i could tell right from the first glance around the room that the current crowd would either hate us or think "eh.. they are alright". New age punks are no punks at all! Im not sure half of them knew what the word Anarchy means. You know, the punk motto?! Fine, whatever...

It has been almost a year since we last played. And the announcer over the PA said that. Which leads me to the most honest response to my music i have ever had.

Right before the last song.

Announcer: "Maybe they will come back and play in a year..."

Anonymous Moron: "Make it TWO!"

HAHAHAHA! now that is funny! Seriously...

Down to the dirty details -

The morons that didnt like us (which is fine by me, i would prefer if they did not show up to my shows:). Were actually in the next band after us!

This is a list of complaints that i have compiled that the Moron band had against us.

1. "The bass player isnt good, he thinks he is the shit."
2. "The singer isnt good, but he acts like he is."
3. "The drummer sucks, but he pretends to be good."
4. "The guitar player is flashy and he sucks"

What does that sound like? Hmm... JEALOUSY! oh, yeah.... that is what it was.

Here is a list of my complaints against them.

1. Over all, they were a bad band. Regurgitated dead, no, road kill punk. Not a single original moment to had with these fellows.
2. They were way to goofy on stage. They may as well have worn diapers and played kazoos...

Here is the one good thing they had going.

I HAVE HEARD WORSE! MUCH WORSE!

Do i sound mad? Or upset by any of this? Im not, actually i thought it was really funny. Like anyone i know gives a shit about a bitch ass regurgitated road kill punk band from Austin Tx.

I had fun...

By the way, it sounded like the bands we played with were all playing the same song over and over again. Really, it seriously did!

The Big-Screen

So, June 4th around 11 PM i was setting my gear up on stage and getting ready to play some music. On either side of the "Stage" was a Big-Screen TV. That may seem like an unimportant fact at the moment but... It does in-fact impact my thoughts on on Saturday night. First reason -

1. When i was setting up my pedals, i bashed my head into the bottom of the damn thing. Yeah, it was padded, but it still sucked.

2. The TVs were still on while we were playing! And there was nothing important on them either! No State-of-the-Union addresses, no nothing! Just commercials and a few little sports tid-bits (thats a funny word). whatever...

Now on to the positive stuff. I had a lot of fun, i didnt screw up too much, etc...

I thought we played well (hmm, why is that I in italics?).

Now, why the italics on the I?

Texas Science

Recently i was in a Taco Bell (i was hungry) with a friend. I had some food (1 Club Chalupa, 2 Soft Tacos). Then as we were leaving, he pointed out a school book that a student was reading. Its name on the cover big and bold - Texas Science.

Uh huh...

So, we figured here in Texas we have our own science! Oh yeah, so that means we get Texas math too! So in Texas, 4x6 = TEXAS! and North/South = Confederacy. South-North = We Win!

(texas science... what?)

Now, do you want to know more? Just do a google search for "Texas school science". and you will see quite a few dumb-ass things.

Silent (This Time)

I've been down this road before,
Alone it calls me.
I got your back and I know you got yours, yours...

Got me a gun,
And you can can get it right,
God be done,
And you'll get it right.
The second time and you will get it right,
This time get it right!

This time.

Yep, those are the lyrics to the song that plays on the new Rf Unit site.

Bellus WebDEV

I have been very busy lately with some website development. In particular, the Bellus Media site. Which, what that link leads to is a very poor gray thing. Now, what i have been REALLY working on is this WebDEV. Of course, it is not finished and it is not streamlined for Microsoft Internet Explorer.

So, USE FIREFOX. Or buy an Apple.

Interesting?

So recently i watched this movie called Primer. What is it about you say?

Well, TIME TRAVEL!

I am a sucker for time travel flicks. My favorite trilogy being Back To The Future of course.

Primer was a very odd movie about temporal manipulation (big words). -->

Why was it odd? Well, let me explain it this way.

It was like what it would really be like if you discovered limited time travel (ie, 24 hours either way).

I dont want to give to much of the movie away...

Two friends/inventors are working a way to create and sustain more power from a source than the source puts out. And then... BAM! Time Machine!! So they start screwing around, creating duplicates of themselves (very strange). It was overall a good Sci-fi flick indeed. I recommend it for consumption.

Dr. Smith, Zorg & O.W. Grant

Oh and you cant forget Lee Harvey Oswald!

Do you know what they all have in common?

Answer: Gary Oldman.

He is by far one of my favorite actors. Maybe even the best!

I am watching Lost In Space. Great movie, space, drama, action, time travel... What else do you need?

He played those i mentioned in these movies. Can you match the names to the films?

Interstate 60.

JFK.

The Fifth Element.

Lost In Space.

Midnight Oil

Burning the Midnight Oil. Who said that?

Well, i think it almost every night. My days are filled with normal tasks of everyday life. While my nights on the other hand are late ones. I stay up all night either working on music, web developing (this site is just about done) or any other thing that i happen to need to get done.

Such as:

1. I am still having a problem with MySQL. Here it is -

For some reason no DB users are allowed access to any DB, table, etc... They were working just fine. Well, one user can access the DBs. Root can, but that is not a good idea to have all my stuff accessing the DBs from the root account! I can login from the mysql cli under a console. I can even use a few different GUIs on my iBook and my pc. All users can login this way, but when they try to login from phpBB2 to fetch data, i get "could not connect..." errors! It does this with any web script the uses a MySQL backend. Its wonky...

2. Something secret has been in the works for quite a while... I would say more, but it is a secret...

3. Bus Hop. A lot of recording has been going on with Bus Hop...

4. Relax time. Yes, i sometimes like to sit and do nothing. Watch a movie. No COMPUTERS, no MUSIC!

5. Uh, thats about it.

Fantomas

Since my blog of the past was, well, of the past after the show... I didnt get to comment on it! So, here it comes.

I have to say, it was probably the best show i have ever personally witnessed. Honestly.

The line-up was this:

1. Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant.
2. The Locust.
3. Fantômas.

I missed most of Trevor's thing. I was kinda upset about that. I did however see enough to know that they are INCREDIBLE! Seriously, they did their thing and did it well. I should have gotten their CD (though i dont recall seeing it). It was jazz. It was rock. It was strong. It was soft. It seemed to me to be the standard jazz format, but in a way i have never heard before. I could tell that most of it was written material, unlike John Zorn or any other Avant Garde jazz freaks. Only some of the solos seemed to be free formed (the way i like it). What i saw of them was really, really good.

The Locust... Um, well... let us put it this way. I am not linking to any site of theirs or am i going to take the time to even find out if they have any sites. I know that probably sounds brutal, hey it is just my opinion. They played a short set (luckily for me). The music was not all that bad. Heavy stuff, Avant Garde Metal i would call it. Only, the singing... It sounded to me like 3 infants wailing to the sound of electric shavers... Terrible.

F A N T O M A S! Yes, they really did something. It was truly a spectacle! Dave Lombardo (i would put a link, but his site is missing) is one of my favorite drummers. Even though i was never a Slayer fan. I just recognized Dave's ability behind the kit. Trevor of course is also in Fantômas. And he of course plays the instrument known as the bass. And good old Buzz on the guitar. He does his thing like no one else. He is not really my favorite player, but he is one hell of a versatile guitarist. His tone is phenomenal! Big heavy, i mean HUGE sound! He does his thing alright... Then Mike. Mike Patton is probably one of my favorite musicians of all. I know a lot of people, umm, like "worship" him. Seriously... GOOGLE it! It is insane. I think is a fantastic song writer/composer/vocalist, but come on people! As i was saying, Mike did his thing, and as usual his thing was... Unusual... Ha! He was "on" that night in my opinion. Lots of strange sounds, screaming, etc... Plus, we got to hear the new album Suspended Animation before it came out! So most of the stuff they played i had never heard before! Very cool. Of course i bought the album at the show...

They played a few from The Director's Cut. "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me", "The Omen", "Cape Fear", "Experiment In Terror"... The beginning of Delirivm Cordia, A few pages from their first release. And a LOT from Suspended Animation. Very coherently (strange as it may seem).

So, i finally got to see Fantômas. I am happy.

I close with a photo...

Can you see it?
(Dave "The Tree", Buzz, Trevor, Mike)

Days of the week

You know, the other night i had an epiphany. Why do all the days in the week have "day" appended to them? We know they are days, right? I mean we dont call months like that, "Hey, its Novembermonth!". Or any other measurement of time for that matter! Seriously, when i tell someone the time i dont say "Its fourhours and thirtytwominutes o'clock"...

Stop the madness!

Lets do this:

1. Take the *day* off of the days of the week.

Mon Tues Wednes Thurs Fri Sat Sun... Now here is the brilliant part.

2. New designation for time of "day".

If someone asks you "What are you doing SaturDAY?". You would reply with what you are doing during the DAYtime! Only, you reply "Though i am not free SaturNIGHT. I have plans."

3. Lets quit calling them days too.

Cycles. Day/Night. There is just as much day as there is night. STOP THE MADNESS! it is an insult to the collective intelligence of the planet EARTH!

Besides, it is an oxymoron to say "I am free SaturDAYNIGHT." I mean come on people!! Day Night?! Is that dumb?

So, how can you help?

Simple, change you lifestyle to reflect that which i discuss here. and/or send me as much money as you can come with...

- jMr.

P.S. I hope everyone has a nice Fricycle.
